Late doing homework

I am in 8th grade and am trying to figure out for an essay how late most kids stay up doing their homework. It is now 12:47am (October 5th) and I am currently working on a paper that is due in two days, well technically tomorrow because it is now Tuesday. Is there a way that you could have the medication work in the evening as well as the day. Now, that wasn’t just self-contained classes but teamed classes as well. There simply aren’t enough hours in the evening to accomplish all of the homework of both kids. As a teacher – and a parent of an ADD child – I’d also gently suggest that you might reconsider his evening medication.

Another way students can get organized is to have a homework assignment book that is set up with spaces for each subject (there are commercially available ones) that they can pre-fill out for a week at a time with anything they can (such as standing weekly assignments) on the weekend. Many instructors we have had, I think really see this as a made up disorder enabling or son to get away with being lazy and not taking initiative to do what he is responsible for. I was a total education geek. Failing grades due to homework turned in late and detention keeping him out of class due to outbreaks and behavior. Because the medication wears off towards the evening, it can take anywhere from three to six hours to complete homework for one day. Can you address any of this within his IEP in the coming year.

I sat him down and said Ok now we are going to have to talk. Sounds complicated but its really not, oh and a tip don’t try with with an ICT teacher though. We have had teachers who have asked our son to copy questions over before answering, highlighting, underlining in different colored pens, etc. ) unless the child tells me too, i. I even bought in a wet ball of paper to prove it but if you use that exuse make sure its really soaked so the teacher cant unscrew it and see its blank.

Our son was diagnosed with ADD when he was 5 years old. But if this is the attitude out there, then I guess that explains why we’re having so much difficulty getting any compassion or understanding from the teacher. How does anyone get motivated for the next assignment after that kind of an experience. Will train my son soon.

This my seem extreme to some but I’m dealing with a combination of reading disability, writing disablity, ADHD, APD, listening comprehension disability, math disability, and extreme disorganization between both kids. It rules our lives and we are unable to ever make plans because homework seems to be all that we do.

Homework will not get done on its own!

Junior high students only please. The same applies to the code of behavior. Last week our son spent approximately 10 hours on an essay, which we checked off in the assignment book, and placed in the homework folder on Sunday afternoon. The subject matter that is taught is subordinated to timeliness. Our son DOES the homework–from 3-6 hours every night. I also met with his teachers and asked them to participate in the new arrangement.

He doesn’t even register on the weight charts for his height and age group, so we are very reluctant to try to address this issue with more medication. Another huge issue was tracking down homework assignments that didn’t come home to be completed, missing worksheets, course books, etc. This has decreased the time demands being placed on me (the parent) by the school, teachers receive neat legible homework, the student learns draft/proof/final document preparation and word processing both real world tools. He is already on the highest legal dose of the medication. These are initialed each day by the teacher and parent.

Sadly, however, looking at all the above postings everyone should see why the iep is crucial. I think it’s important for the others who responded to recognize that our son DID do the homework. I once told my teacher that I accidently took my little sister’s homework and so she must have mine. Before the student walks out the door, check and make sure that he has all of his work for that day, better yet get him in the habit of doing that if possible. My son started 8th grade failing by the end of first quarter. My kids have to start doing homework so that they can.

No son or daughter should be doing hours upon hours of homework every night and with or without medication, I’d want to do whatever I could to lessen that time. I also let her know that if she says it is one of the best papers, he comes home excited, and taking all of the points away because he did not highlight was just not acceptable. He understands that better now and I think appreciates my reasons now. This has received mixed reviews from several teachers over the years but it is incorporated in IEP/504 plans as a modification when penmenship, spelling or grammar are not the objective of the assignment. She said it was to edit, but she couldn’t go back and re read everyone’s papers so they were to highlight changes. Either that or just hand in your book and if they tell you that they didn’t see any homework in there just tell them that you did it on lined paper and it must have fallen out (this actually worked for me).
